Fantastic Corporation: has developed a system to offer video streaming to GPRS 11.09.2002 (14:03)
Wireless Mobile Services Working with Hewlett-Packard as a systems integrator, The Fantastic Corporation has developed a system to offer video streaming to GPRS mobile handsets. This system was successfully tested at one of Europe's largest wireless telecommunications operators. The service offers live video streaming and Video On Demand (VOD) accessible via a portal. The initial pilot used sports video clips to demonstrate the innovative capabilities available on the latest generation color mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants.
Video to wireless devices Fantastic is providing the distribution mechanism that interfaces with the content management system to move data and live video from the head end of the network to the local Point Of Presence (POP) on the GPRS network. The distribution functionality is robust and flexible enough to accommodate various data types: video files for VOD, streams for live transmissions and XML meta data for portal updates. Fantastic BroadSphere is used to broadcast MPEG1 live video streaming together with XML data to the Fantastic edge server MediaACE. The live feeds are then passed through a transcoding module for transformation into the appropriate formats for specific media players and for VOD the files are delivered in MPEG4 format to a third party video server installed at each POP. Both services are provided with different third party video servers for delivery to the mobile user device. The XML meta data associated with each type of video is used to automatically generate updates to the portal page viewed by the end user which details the available content.
