CHICAGO (Reuters) - Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - News), the world's second-largest cell phone maker, on Tuesday said its quarterly profit rose on higher sales as the end markets for its products showed strength. The Schaumburg, Illinois, company reported a fourth-quarter net profit of $489 million, or 20 cents a share, compared with $174 million, or 8 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding one-time items, Motorola earned 17 cents a share.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The blue-chip Dow fell on Tuesday after earnings from manufacturing heavyweights 3M Co. (NYSE:MMM - News) and United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX - News) disappointed investors, but strength in telecommunications shares helped the technology-heavy Nasdaq end at a fresh 2 1/2-year high.
