"in a surprise move, Groen’s Anglo-Dutch delivery giant Just Eat Takeaway gazumped Uber’s bid, offering $7.3bn (£5.8bn) for Grubhub compared with Uber’s $6bn.
It was a move that nobody saw coming, not only because a European tech company acquiring an American one is an all-too-rare sight, but because the ink is barely dry on the £6bn deal that combined Just Eat and its Dutch counterpart Takeaway.com this year. ...While Just Eat Takeaway and Grubhub were profitable last year, UberEats, DoorDash and Postmates all lost money. The companies, he said, were creating “empty calorie growth” with “irrational business models”. The UK’s Deliveroo, which also runs a courier network, has been in danger of a cash crunch recently.
On the face of it, Groen has a point. On an Ebitda basis, a measure of adjusted operating profits, Just Eat Takeaway Grubhub made €402m (£361m) last year, while UberEats lost €1.2bn, despite revenue not too far off...." |
