"First Bauxite Plans The Production And Sale Of 100,000 Tonnes Of Refractory Bauxite Per Year From The Bonsika Project In Guyana
First Bauxite’s president Yannis Tsitos popped into the Minesite offices in London for a chat not so long ago, and offered an interesting insight into his company’s plans to seize a sizeable chunk of the global refractory bauxite trade by producing a product known as Guysin in Guyana. “We are the first company to mine and beneficiate this kind of sintered refractory grade bauxite”, he explained, which is perhaps not surprising, as Guysin is a proprietary name, the product will be produced using proprietary kit supplied by Thyssen-Krupp, and outside of Guyana most of the world’s other refractory-grade production comes out of China, which often keeps its methods and methodologies to itself.
Bauxite is famously the ore for aluminium, but when it comes to mining is classified in several ways, according to the likely end use: abrasive, chemical, cement, metallurgical, or refractory. “A refractory material”, says Wikipedia, “is one that retains its strength at high temperatures”. Hence, refractory bauxite is used principally in the manufacture of heat-resistant materials, and specifically in the briquettes that line the insides of furnaces. "
