The iShares MSCI World ETF has closed the first quarter of 2026 in negative territory, reflecting a challenging global environment for developed equity markets. Since the start of the year, the fund has shed approximately five percent of its value.
Structural Concentration Amplifies Losses
A significant headwind for the ETF has been its own composition. The portfolio is heavily weighted toward technology stocks, which account for nearly 27 percent of its holdings. Concentration risk is further highlighted by the fact that the ten largest positions alone make up about 25 percent of the fund's assets.
NVIDIA stands as the top holding with a 5.3 percent weighting, followed by Apple at 4.6 percent. Combined, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon contribute an additional 9.6 percent. This heavy tilt meant the fund was disproportionately impacted by the valuation corrections that swept through the tech sector in recent weeks. The current share price trades notably below its 50- and 100-day moving averages—a technical indicator pointing to sustained selling pressure.
Index Provider Addresses Crypto-Holding Companies
In a separate but notable development, index provider MSCI made a structural decision following its February review. It confirmed that companies classified as "Digital Asset Treasuries"—those holding more than half of their assets in cryptocurrencies—will remain eligible for inclusion in the MSCI World Index. This means MicroStrategy retains its place in the benchmark.
However, to prevent uncontrolled weighting surges driven by crypto-backed capital increases, MSCI has introduced a new rule governing share issuance for this specific category of firms.
Technicals Hint at Potential for a Rebound
As the second quarter gets underway, market participants are watching to see if current price levels will hold as support. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), with a reading near 20, is deep in oversold territory. While this technical condition can set the stage for a short-term bounce, it does not in itself signal a definitive reversal of the prevailing downtrend.
