The Canadian mining firm Almonty Industries has outlined a definitive operational roadmap for 2026, centered on advancing its portfolio of strategic metal projects. This plan, detailed in a shareholder letter dated January 20, aims to establish a Western-centric supply chain for critical materials, a goal gaining urgency amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

A Pivotal Year for the Sangdong Tungsten Mine

The primary operational focus for the year is the transition of Phase I at the Sangdong tungsten mine in South Korea into full commercial production. This milestone is to be followed by the commencement of the Phase II expansion, with its completion targeted for 2027. Initial ore was successfully extracted from the site by the end of 2025.

Sangdong is recognized as one of the largest tungsten deposits outside of China and boasts a long projected mine life. The development is strategically positioned to supply the United States and allied nations with this critical raw material.

Advancing a Global Portfolio

Alongside its flagship Korean asset, Almonty is progressing work at its other international sites. At the Panasqueira mine in Portugal, an extensive drilling program is underway to access a new production level, known as Level 4.

In the United States, the company is targeting production readiness for its Gentung Browns Lake project in Montana by the second half of the year. Concurrently, Almonty is engaged in reserve definition and development planning for the molybdenum resource at its Sangdong property.

Market Tailwinds for Critical Minerals

The company's strategic execution aligns with a market environment increasingly valuing supply chain security for essential commodities. Tungsten is indispensable for defense, aerospace, and high-technology manufacturing sectors.

Global tungsten prices are experiencing upward pressure, driven by supply constraints and rising demand from industries such as electric mobility and defense. This trend, coupled with a broad industrial shift towards diversifying supply chains away from traditional sources, underscores the significance of new production capacity originating outside China.

Key Operational Milestones for 2026:

  • Sangdong, South Korea: Achieve full commercial production and initiate Phase II expansion plans.
  • Panasqueira, Portugal: Execute drilling campaign to support expansion planning.
  • Gentung Browns Lake, USA: Target production readiness in the latter half of the year.
  • Strategic Vision: Build an integrated Western tungsten supply platform.

By methodically bringing its global projects online, Almonty Industries is positioning itself as an alternative supplier in a market actively seeking independence from Chinese sources. The coming months will be critical in determining whether the company's ambitious development timelines can be met.
